Daniel Ballesteros is a photographer from St. Louis, MO, currently based in California. He is a third-generation Filipino-Polish-American from a family that began assimilating with U.S. culture in 1945. Photography became the outlet for him to explore and record his surroundings, family, and environment in an attempt to find his place among them.
Legacy and survival reoccur as themes in his work. How does one generation prepare the next? What is left behind for the next generation to build upon? And what is withheld?
His work is the result of the accumulated influences of intersecting histories. The histories of his family's assimilation, of the Philippines, of the Catholic church, of Photography, of the Midwest, the West and now, of Richmond all work to guide his vision.
